Spelling and Dialect[]
General[]
Different speakers in the game are from different eras and locations and, by design, use different phraseology and spelling.
The speech (and spelling) of characters in the game is American-English or British-English as appropriate to the character. Older characters with longer lives may exhibit archaic, anachronistic, or geographically misplaced speech patterns and turns of phrase depending on their background.
Other notes:
- The Main Character notably uses both formal and informal American-English, depending on how angry he is. The MC's speech becomes noticeably more backwoods/redneck when angry.
- X appears to adapt to his wielder, and therefore uses the MC's speech, so American-English.
- Merlin's Echo similarly to X seems to speak filtered through the MC's speech patterns and experience.
- Molly is English from Essex, but went native while doing her undergrad at UCLA and speaks West-coast 'valley' faux-American, and as such, is spelled in American-English.
- Jannice (MC's mother), of course, uses American-English.
- Emily uses an extremely formal and somewhat antiquated version of British-English, completely eschewing the use of contractions. She also consistently upper-cases "Gods" while MC and the Evokers do not. Emily's reference for the MC changes along a spectrum with her mood. Actual Name (couch time) < Husband (warning sign)< Dear < Dearest < My Love/My Heart (normal/highest terms of endearment). Dearest Pervert is also a term of endearment used in more intimate moments. She tends to capitalize magic terms. In Book 3 Emily's spectrum expands to include graduated "Tomcat" references such as "Sir Tomcat", "Dearest Tomcat", "Silly Tomcat", "Foolish Tomcat", "My Tomcat" and "Perverted Tomcat"
- Kath and Bella use a soft border-clan version of Scottish
- The Maclachlans speak a very Scottish Western Highland version.
- Notably the more angry Katie gets, the more pronounced her brogue becomes.
- Andy and Fia largely don't care and speak full Brogue
- Keith is more controlled and tends to speak without much Brogue
- Gods vs gods. In a world where gods are real and vengeful, most people upper-case them as a sign of respect. Especially when talking to one directly. Evokers are not particularly inclined to follow this practice and, as a rule, an evoker will always lowercase the word.
If additional American characters are added, we can expect them to use American-English. However, almost all characters encountered during Book 1 use British-English, as is appropriate to the Locale.
Spelling Mistakes[]
To report spelling mistakes with a character's American/British-English or Scottish-Brogue go to the Love of Magic Discord and report the text of the error in the #love-of-magic-spellcheck channel.
- As noted above, characters will use the spelling and dialect appropriate to them.
- If you are not 100% sure of the correction, discuss it in #love-of-magic-spoilers before posting on the spellcheck channel and/or just do a couple of searches for the typo word. It is not uncommon to find out it is either an archaic variant of a word, or it is the way they spell it across the Atlantic.
- Please only post corrections and do not engage in discussion on the spellcheck channel itself (It is used as a 'todo' list, there is a sticky post explaining it.) If you must discuss or correct an item posted on the spell check channel at the very least, kindly START A THREAD!
- Also please scan back to see if your correction has already been posted. It is only necessary to scan back to the last time Droid Productions posted in the channel: "====================================> Fixed to here".
- If possible show the line of dialogue and recommended correction. Be sure to include enough of the dialog that Droid can search for it. You will see plenty of examples of usable corrections in the forum. Most commonly it is done in this basic format and may be accompanied by a screen snip.
- "Original Dialogue Text" SB "Fixed Dialogue Text"
- NO BOOK 1 CORRECTIONS: There are a small handful of uncorrected spelling errors that have been identified in Book 1. There is no point in reporting these as changes are no longer being made to Book 1 for anything but severe issues. Book 1 is considered a completed product. The risks of updates to Book 1 causing unintended issues outweigh the benefits of minor updates such as spelling corrections.
