This page provides details on how the companions of the player character assist in battle and their various abilities. For background information on the companions, please consult the Characters page. Some companion abilities can only be used once per outing to Elsewhere or need to be refreshed at a Rest after use. This will be shown under Frequency.
When exploring the Paths in Elsewhere, the player character can bring any 3 companions as support. Note that sometimes companions are off on errands of their own and will be temporarily unavailable.
Katie Maclachlan[]
Katie is all about fire. Although her basic fireball attack isn't all that strong initially, you will get multiple opportunities to upgrade her abilities. On day 105 she receives a massive boost, upgrading her basic attack and special attack from the flawless fire gem as well as gaining a new passive ability to make the player character immune to Fire.

While initially mostly restricted to a support role supporting the player, once Emily gains Lancelot's sword Secace on day 76 she can unleash a devastating attack. Emily also occasionally uses the ability Excalibur to grant both shields and rage, but this is only used in scripted story events. Outside of combat Emily can help you find ingredients from Treasure sites.

Moibeal "Bella" Hume[]
Bella is the only character who requires a small sidequest to be added to the party. Considering her incredible utility in and out of combat this should be done as soon as possible. In combat Bella has several crossbow attacks at her disposal, as well as providing a passive damage reduction to the player. Outside of combat Bella can help you find ingredients from Treasure sites (a stronger version of Emily's buff), as well as give you extra moves by talking to her at a Rest site(once per outing).

Molly Irvine[]
Molly only has one ability, but it is tremendously powerful. She replaces all 5 cards(3 on Ultra difficulty) in the player's hand with Jokers, allowing constant access to the high-tier poker hands and the devastation that goes with them. This comes at a price however, as she drains so much of the player's energy to do so that the player becomes weak for 2 turns, dealing 25% less base damage.
Outside of combat Molly can help find gems or money from Treasure sites.

Katashi Akane[]
Akane manipulates the 9 center cards on the board, sorting them by value or suit. Although an advanced ability, a skilled player can use this to shift the cards so they most favor the hands they themselves can play, while disadvantaging the opponent. Akane will not just join any party however, insisting on bringing her bodyguard Kitsune along, efectively taking up 2 companion slots. Later in book 1 she will also be willing to explore the Paths in a party together with Molly and Bella specifically.
When exploring Akane allows you to hover over cards to see what they are, allowing you effectively to get whatever cards you wish by shuffling and hovering over cards. In book two you can use this to farm resource points with Chloe/Akane in your party as Chloe can "Find" RP at rest sites. Take Bella along to get a few more moves and you can harvest 70 RP in an outing you power gamer you.
When sorting by value, Jokers are treated as the lowest value and Aces the highest. When sorting by suit this is done alphabetically(Clubs, Diamonds, Hearts, Spades) with Jokers once again considered the "lowest" suit.
Shadow Hunter allows trading cards from the center of the board one of four ways
- Trade Hearts for Healing (100 per card)
- Trade Spades for Rage (20 per card)
- Trade Diamonds for shields (50 per Card)
- Trade Clubs for Poison Damage (100 per Card)

Her one ability allows the player to do double damage on the next attack. She's as yet unavailable to join the player on the paths. She also provides the same passive damage reduction as (unimproved) Bella.
